Richard Brakenburgh
(Haarlem 1650 – 1702) An Oriental visiting a Dutch family, signed or inscribed at lower right R. Brakenb, oil on canvas, 50.5 x 40.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Willem van de Watering for confirming the authenticity of this painting by Brakenburgh. In his opinion the scene derives from a contemporary theatre play. Provenance: Austrian nobility Brakenburgh was a student of Hendrick Mommers. He depicted primarily interiors, tavern scenes, wedding celebrations, and merry-making carousers. The present scene of an Oriental visiting a Dutch family is a rare and interesting exception.
